Three Small Things to Create More Balance

This week's Three Small Things is going to continue in the theme of life balance that I explored earlier this week. Specifically, is there an area of your life that you know is suffering for want of time, energy, or attention? How can you feed that aspect of your life to create more balance?

It's quite possible that something in your life immediately popped into your mind already. If you are unsure where to start, some areas that many people tend to accidentally make a low priority are:

  • Care of your physical body (such as sleep, exercise, or healthful eating)
  • Working on a long-term highly strategic (but non-urgent) project at work or home
  • Care of your mental, creative, or spiritual well-being (such as making time for prayer/meditation, doing something fun by yourself, spending time on a hobby, learning or something new)
  • Doing a favor or planning a thoughtful loving gesture for someone you care about
  • Doing things that are fun instead of chore-oriented with a spouse, partner, or child

For today's exercise, choose only one thing to focus on. Whatever you choose, choose something that truly matters to you that you would love to spend some time nurturing... not something that gave you a jolt of guilt when you thought of it because you "should" be doing more. Now, thinking about your area of focus, here are a few questions to ponder:

  • What is one small thing that you could spend just ten minutes on TODAY in your area of focus?

  • What is one small thing that you could add to your weekly schedule and do consistently that would impact your area of focus? (I challenge you: add it to your calendar or task list right now.)

  • In what ways (large or small) might this investment be worthwhile and rewarding?

Have a fantastic weekend everyone!

I have always been guilty of taking for granted the things important in my life. Thanks for reminding me here of the things I need to give my time and focus on. :-)

@Walter - Most of us do, to some degree. I think it takes considerable conscious effort to remain mindful of them. Thanks for commenting!
